Professor Filipe Ribeiro de Meneses honoured by the Royal Irish Academy

Professor de Meneses with Professor Peter Kennedy, the President of the RIA

We are very pleased to announce that Professor Filipe Ribeiro de Meneses was recently awarded one of the highest honours in academia. He became a member of the Royal Irish Academy, Ireland’s leading body of experts in the sciences and humanities, on Friday 26th May 2017.

The Portuguese President, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, issued a statement congratulating Professor de Meneses which you can access here through the  official site of the Presidency of the Portuguese Republic

Translated, it states: “Upon learning that Filipe Ribeiro de Meneses has been admitted as a member of the prestigious Royal Irish Academy, I wish to congratulate heartily this excellent Portuguese researcher. Although young, historian Filipe Ribeiro de Meneses has already a remarkable record as a researcher and lecturer of Contemporary History, and is the author of decisive works about Salazarism and Portugal’s participation in the Great War – works which deservedly attracted the attention and interest of the public at large. He is an example of the talent and efforts of Portuguese researchers who live abroad and who gain notoriety for the exceptional quality of their scientific output.

Filipe Ribeiro de Meneses’ admittance to the Royal Irish Academy is a source of pride to the national scientific community, a fact which I note with the greatest pleasure.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa”

Professor Peter Kennedy, President of the RIA, Professor de Meneses and Bernardo Futscher Pereira, the Portuguese Ambassador

There are now 580 Members of the Royal Irish Academy (of whom 85 are Honorary or overseas Members). Those elected are entitled to use the designation ‘MRIA’ after their name.

To become a member of the RIA you must be nominated by an existing fellow. The renowned scholar Professor John Horne (emeritus, Trinity College Dublin) nominated Professor de Meneses. All nominations received are subject to rigorous international peer-review by the Advisory Committee on the Assessment of Candidates for Membership (ACACM), whose role is to select those who best meet the criteria for election, benchmarked to international standards.

The ceremony was attended by the Portuguese Ambassador, Bernardo Futscher Pereira.
